Gazing out at the water sometimes helped Patrick get over smaller bouts of writer’s block, which was why he’d come down to the boardwalk to work. But the change in scenery still wasn’t helping him get into the groove.

He deleted a line of dialogue he’d written with a heavy sigh. Nothing sounded right to him.

The newly opened casual snack bar where he was sitting had Wi-Fi and a lot of outdoor seating, so he wasn’t the only person on a laptop at this time of day. He wondered if anyone else was struggling as much as he was.

He opened his email against his better judgment, only to find a message from his editor asking how the book was coming along. Patrick sipped his lemonade and debated how to respond. Going the honest route might make his editor panic and debate whether to push back his release date, which Patrick didn’t want to deal with. And the adoption process was a difficult one, too, if they went that route.

He glanced back down at his phone for a moment, pulling up his texts. Aubrey had texted him her travel itinerary the other day, since she had decided to come home soon. He hoped they could work things out. He still wasn’t any closer to figuring out any viable solution. They’d seen a marriage counselor for a while, but it hadn’t smoothed over the issues in their relationship. All it had done was made them realize that they wanted completely different things.

He wondered what Aubrey had thought about in her time away. Had she been mulling
